This was a sad week at the Henry Doorly Zoo after what could be called a Sleeping Giant, awoke. According to zoo officials, the 13 year old Silverback, killed what was his 3 year old daughter in what has been described as a fit of rage. The gorilla named Samson slammed the younger daughter named Baina to the ground in an elevated location from where the smaller gorilla fell about 8 feet landing on her head.
Luckily this action was not conducted in front of visitors. This is not the lasting images that anyone would want for a child to see. It is a reminder however that these are still wild animals and can, and will, revert to their instinctive levels in a heartbeat. It is knowing that I have a chance to walk amongst wild animals that makes the zoo even more precious.
